No Measles-related deaths were recorded; the suspected case is still under investigation in Noguchi – GHS

The Acting Northern Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Braimah Abubakari said the Service is still awaiting laboratory results from the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) on the five deaths suspected to be related to Mealses.

Until the results come in, they cannot conclude that any deaths are related to Measles.

He told TV3 that “If we suspect a case sample was sent to Noghuchi in Accra and we got confirmation from Noguchi and that’s why the children unfortunately died and the results have not come back scientifically, it is very difficult for us to conclude that they died from Measles.

“He can say that there are five suspected deaths from Measles and this is what he said, so until we get confirmation from Noguchi or from the Lab, we will not be able to say that there are five cases of death of Mesalses, as we say. among all the confined cases , no one was killed.

The Head of Paediatrics and Child Health at Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), Professor Alhassan Abdul Mumin was earlier informed that the facility has recorded five suspected measles deaths.

“The only reason we’re still calling it a suspected case is because we don’t have the lab results until now.”

“We have five cases admitted with suspected measles. The suspected measles has all the features that would be documented for a child or patient with measles,” said multiple media reports.
