Nigerian man allegedly beats wife to death over bread

Anambra State Government says it has started an investigation into the death of a woman, Ogochukwu Anene, allegedly killed by her husband, Wilson Uwadiegwu, over bread.

The Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare in the state, Ify Obinabo, stated this on Wednesday in Awka, when he received the victim’s mother, Cordelia Anene, in his office.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a clip trending on social media claimed the victim, identified as Ada Awka, was beaten to death by her husband over bread.

The Commissioner, Mrs. Obinabo, said the Anambra State Government is cooperating with the Enugu State Government in the investigation to get justice for the deceased.

“Because the deceased is from Anambra, the state government will not remain silent on the unfortunate incident but will ensure that it is thoroughly investigated and concluded in record time,” he said.

Mr. Obinabo urged women in abusive marriages to always speak out and ask for help instead of dying in silence.

The victim’s mother, Mrs. Anene, who stated that her daughter was killed by her husband, said the suspect “ran away immediately after committing the act.”

She appealed to the state government to help and give justice to her daughter.

Mrs. Anene said: “Ogochukwu was beaten by her husband because she ate the bread she bought for the children.

“When the children were going to eat, he was very angry that they asked him about the bread and poked him with mirrors and other things that made him look bad.

“A few days after the beating, my daughter was hospitalized at the Niger Foundation in Enugu where she said she was bleeding internally as a result of the injuries she sustained during the beating.

“The doctor confirmed this after several scans were done and referred her to the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku-Ozalla. When all this happened, her husband was nowhere to be found.
