The federal government on Tuesday in Abuja, inaugurated a 22-member Presidential Transitional Council ahead of the 2023 handover to the incoming administration.
The committee, chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, has the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, the Attorney General of the Federation and the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Justice as members.
Others are permanent secretaries of ministries and offices responsible for defence, interior, national budget and planning, foreign affairs, information and culture, Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs.
The rest are Permanent Secretary, Cabinet Affairs, Public Service Affairs, Economic and Political Affairs, SGF office, State House, National Security Adviser, Chief of Defense Staff, Inspector General of Police, Director General, National Intelligence Agency, Director General, State Security Service, Registrar The National Assembly, the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nigeria and two representatives to be nominated by the president-elect after the general election.
In his speech, Mr. Mustapha said President Muhammadu Buhari, in continuation of his commitment to allow a fair and credible electoral process and hand over power to the next president of Nigeria, signed Executive Order No. 14 2023.
According to him, the order is about the facilitation and management of ‘Presidential Transition’, which provides a legal framework for a smooth transition of power from one administration to another.
“Today marks another historic moment for our administration, as we continue to demonstrate our commitment to strengthening key government institutions that support our democratic process.
“It is with joy and honor that I undertake the onerous task of inaugurating the Presidential Transitional Council, on behalf of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

According to him, the council has the responsibility to facilitate and manage the 2023 Presidential Transition Program, and facilitate the process of handing over the current president to the president-elect.
Other responsibilities include managing the security of the president-elect and vice-president-elect, including coordinating security briefings on national security, post-election and more.

SGF said he will in his own capacity as chairman of the council, do everything in his power to ensure that the council meets the expectations of Mr. President.
“I urge each of us to do more to ensure that the next administration receives the support it needs to get off to a good start and quickly.”

Responding on behalf of the members of the council, the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Folasade Yemi-Esan, thanked Mr. Buhari for the trust reposed in him.
Mrs Yemi-Esan said the steps taken by Buhari to establish a transitional council before the presidential election were not only proactive but also selfless and a noble decision in the interest of the country.
“This will certainly remain one of the legacies of the post-administration.

“You, as a member of the committee, said that the importance of the work we have done cannot be underestimated. This is due to the outstanding achievements of the presidential administration.
Mr. Buhari will leave power on May 29 when his second and final term will expire.
