Two commercial banks have reportedly been set on fire during riots in the southern Nigerian city of Warri over cash shortages following the central bank’s controversial decision to scrap the use of old banknotes.
Some banks are also said to have been vandalized and looted.
In Benin City, angry protesters stormed the local office of the central bank, but were chased away by security officers who fired tear gas.
In the city of Ibadan, protesters blocked roads as they complained about the unavailability of new banknotes.
The central bank said the currency redesign and replacement policy would help tackle inflation by reducing the amount of cash in circulation.
New records will also be more difficult to create, he added.
