The Nigerian government, on Friday, conferred the highest rank of ‘ambassador-in-situ’ on 115 career diplomats from the ministry of foreign affairs.
Speaking at the investiture ceremony, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, praised the diplomats for their dedication over the years. He said the title shows that the president appreciates the sacrifices he has made over the years.
Nigeria’s image and benefits in the global community have increased over the years due to its efficient representation around the world, Mr. Onyeama said.
“One aspect of our foreign policy and diplomacy that we do not appreciate very much is how Nigeria maintains good relations with every country in the world,” he said, adding that these relations are managed by Nigerian diplomats in various countries.
Ambassador-in-situ is the highest rank for a person in the foreign service. At the ceremony, there were 16 women and 99 men.

“This is a recognition of the work you have done and the position you have achieved. Automatically, when you reach a certain level in the diplomatic service, you get the right to be awarded by the President with the honor of ambassador there,” said Mr. Onyeama.
In addition, there is a difference when a diplomat is accredited to a country as an ambassador and the recognition given to the level of work performed and the level achieved.
Those appointed include serving and retired diplomats in the foreign service.

Anthony Ebipador, one of the newly appointed ambassadors, told PREMIUM TIMES that he felt comfortable and hoped for a speedy delivery.

Also, Nonyelum Afoekelu expressed happiness at the appointment adding that he looks forward to serving.
Another awardee, Walter Ajobo, speaking at the ceremony, thanked the president for the award.
“We have been patiently waiting for a day like this. For those who served, this is career motivation and for retirees, this is career satisfaction,” he said.

He also thanked and praised the minister for facilitating the investiture while promising his colleagues and friends to serve whenever possible.
In a vote of thanks on behalf of the appointee, Kabiru Musa thanked the president for honoring the age-old tradition. He said the award will motivate other colleagues to work hard.
