US Ambassador to Ghana Virginia Palmer has announced $5 million in new US funding to improve the performance of the National Health Insurance Scheme and ensure the quality of health services in Ghana.
The Ambassador on Monday, March 20, 2023, joined the Chief Executive of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr Bernard Okoe Boye, to launch a new five-year partnership.
NHIA, on the other hand, will contribute $1.7 million to this project, making it a total of $6.7 million over 5 years.
At a brief ceremony to sign the partnership, Ambassador Palmer said the US Government’s funding will support the digitization of the NHIA process, provide Scheme performance data, and will ensure safe and effective delivery of health services.
“The health sector is at the heart of Ghana’s development. It is important for the well-being of all Ghanaians that funding for health is prioritized. A healthy population is the foundation for a prosperous population,” said Ambassador Palmer.
Dr Okoe Boye said the NHIA-US Government partnership aims to increase NHIA’s capacity to digitize all information systems.
“Digitalization will make data available to NHIA to better communicate the financial status and programs of the Scheme to stakeholders. The partnership will also focus on building NHIA’s system to monitor the clinical quality of health services.
“This actionable clinical data will help NHIA advocate for improved quality of care in public, faith-based, and private health facilities contributing to better health outcomes in Ghana”, he said.
Dr Okoe Boye said the funding from the US Government would not only make the operations of the National Health Insurance Scheme transparent but would also make the scheme attractive which would increase membership.
