NFL: Emotional Bills win for Damar Hamlin in first game since his cardiac arrest

BUFFALO, NY—The Buffalo Bills made an emotional return to the field on Sunday with a slaying tribute to honor safety Damar Hamlin, who sent love and watched from a hospital bed in Cincinnati after suffering a heart attack during an NFL game last week. .

The Bills arrived at their home stadium in Hamlin-inspired clothing and took the field waving a “Pray for Damar” flag before gathering at the 50-yard line where they held up three fingers in honor of their jersey numbers.

Moments before the game got under way, Hamlin, who has made an incredible move this week, wrote “GAMETIME!!!” on Twitter along with a photo showing him in a hospital bed and making a heart-shaped gesture.

The post came less than two hours after he wrote: “GameDay .. There’s nothing I love more than Throwing Tunnels With My Brothers. God Uses Me In Different Ways Today. Tell Someone You Love Today!” let’s go @BuffaloBills.”

The Bills, sporting the “3” jersey patch on their uniforms, got off to a magical start against the New England Patriots when Nyheim Hines returned the game’s opening kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown that left many on the sideline in disbelief.

The play marked the first time in three years and three months since Buffalo’s last kickoff was returned for a touchdown and prompted Hamlin to quickly tweet “OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!”

Hamlin then directed the post “I love you too” at Dawson Knox after the Bills tight end flashed the third number with his finger followed by writing a heart-shaped hand with his hand after scoring the second goal.

After John Brown’s 42-meter touchdown reception at the end of the third quarter put Buffalo ahead 28-17 against the ball for Bills assistant athletic trainer Denny Kellington who managed CPR above Hamlin on the field there.

‘IS SPIRITUAL’

The Bills went on to win 35-23 in the regular season finale and the win was dedicated to Hamlin, who spoke to his teammates during a video call after the game.

“We just wanted to go out and play free, play loose, play for (Damar),” said Bills quarterback Josh Allen. “And obviously the first kickoff, you couldn’t have scripted it better.

“It’s quite emotional … it’s spiritual, it’s true. It’s bone-chilling. It’s special.”

Hamlin, 24, collapsed during Monday’s game in Cincinnati after making a tackle and then had to be resuscitated on the field as stunned players from both teams cried, prayed and hugged.

Hamlin woke up two days later and had his breathing tube removed. He also surprised friends on Friday during a video call where he said “love you guys,” flexed his biceps and made a heart symbol with his hands.

In the latest health update provided by the Bills on Saturday, the team described Hamlin’s neurological function as “excellent” while he remains in critical care.

Bills head coach Sean McDermott said before Saturday’s game that the positive news on Hamlin’s recovery in the last few days allowed the Bills to ease their minds and turn their attention back to football.

“It’s been a huge lift,” McDermott said of Hamlin’s improved condition. “It’s really for them not to think about Damar, it’s enough to focus on the preparation for this game today.”

A LEAGUE-WIDE TRIBUTE

Hamlin was recognized by the NFL on Sunday as players from all teams wore “Love for Damar 3” shirts during support times at various stadiums.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, wearing a “3” hat, was among those in attendance in Buffalo where a stream of fans lined up outside the stadium to sign a giant card for Hamlin.

“Thank you medical staff”, “Love for Damar”, “Do it for Hamlin”, “Still praying”, and “Hamlin Strong” are among the signs carried in the stadium.

Even “3” in each number 30-yard-line on the field is limited in the blue Bills, gestures are also made in stadiums around the league on the last day of the NFL’s regular season.

Before kickoff, the Bills’ announcer asked the crowd to help save Hamlin, while also giving special recognition to the first responders who helped save his life.
