Newcastle moved a step closer to ending their 54-year major trophy drought with a 2-0 quarter-final win over Leicester in the Carabao Cup.
In front of an explosive St James Park atmosphere, Newcastle dominated but it took until the 60th minute to open the scoring when Dan Burn scored his first goal for the club.
The lead was doubled 12 minutes later as Joelinton broke free down the left and picked out the same corner as Burn to seal victory.
Leicester, who offered little for large parts without the still-injured James Maddison, created a few openings late on, but substitute Jamie Vardy wasted the option, curling a corner from seven yards out.
The win ended 47 years without a League Cup semi-final for Newcastle as they look to win their first major trophy since 1969. They will find their semi-final opponents on Wednesday night – the draw is live on Sky Sports.
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said of Newcastle’s lack of trophies: “It’s been a long, long wait. No criticism of anyone trying, but we want to speed up the process and try to get the team to succeed as quickly as possible.
“It’s easier said than done, and now we’re going to the semi-finals. Getting to the semi-finals is one thing, but you want to get to the final, you want to experience it.
“We know we’re going to have a big test in front of whoever gets it, but we’re happy to be there.”
How Newcastle approach Wembley…
Newcastle’s packed front support demanded a quick start and could have gone ahead within 45 seconds, but Sean Longstaff scuffed a corner at the back post when it looked easier to score.
The excellent Bruno Guimaraes missed the target after Joe Willock and Joelinton had linked up well down the left and Longstaff missed another opening when his effort was caught by Danny Ward.
Leicester threatened sporadically with Patson Daka’s decision to cross instead of taking an angle proving wrong as they earned a 0-0 draw despite Newcastle’s dominance.
Joelinton’s low drive back from the foot of the post in a few seconds starts again as it feels one-sided for the game to continue. Burn then headed home Kieren Trippier’s free-kick when he could have done better – but his moment would come.
The full-back, a former Newcastle season ticket holder, burst into the penalty area from the left and fired past Ward and inside the far post to send the home crowd into raptures.
Atap left the stadium again shortly after Joelinton intercepted Miguel Almiron’s pass that took Marc Albrighton out of the game. Like Burn, the Brazilian found the far corner with a superb finish.
Going 2-0 down seemed to put Leicester up as they began to find space with Vardy on the pitch, but they had two glorious chances to reduce the deficit in quick succession, first denying an open goal from seven yards, then firing from a corner. angle.
This is Newcastle night. And how the home fans celebrate.
Man of the match: Bruno Guimares
Sky Sports’ co-commentator Andy Hinchcliffe said: “This player epitomized the performance of Newcastle. The perfect combination of aggression and quality.”
Guimares was the driving force. They are everywhere. Killed Leicester on the counter and finished off some good play from his teammates, although the finish was a little off. This is only a negative for players who are in a hurry – just like their club.
Howe: We just don’t stop
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe spoke to Sky Sports:
“It felt the same as the Leeds and Sheffield Wednesday games. We had chance after chance and we couldn’t take it. The important thing is not to be impatient and not to overthink and be too wasteful. Also, the goals came at a good time.
“Leicester are a transition threat, especially when Vardy comes on. The concentration of the defenders is very good. At 0-0, we limited it.
“The hallmark of our team is that they don’t stop. The athletic ability of our team is very high. The ally is the mentality, to understand the need to work and run and our players understand. try to push.
“You have to enjoy winning. It doesn’t happen all the time. You can be hard for a moment in the dressing room and you want the players to feel.”
Rodgers: Newcastle deserved to win
Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers spoke to Sky Sports:
“First of all, congratulations to Newcastle for making it to the semi-finals. I think they deserved to win the game. We didn’t have the quality. We gave the ball away easily and needed a lot of touches. We had no objections. Two soft goals too. We could so much better in that area. but Newcastle is better.
“We had a chance. In the first half we went into a good area. In the second half we had a good chance. If Jamie [Vardy] makes 2-1 in the last 15 minutes of the game is more nervous. We can’t get the target so we can feel the pressure.
