A newborn is “fighting for life” after being born at the scene of a murder. The mother – who is nine months pregnant – was shot over the weekend, the father alleged.
On January 8th Kyla O’Neal was found by Minnesota law enforcement in her car, which was parked in the Amazon fulfillment center warehouse. When he found the pregnant mother around 7 o’clock, she had suffered a gunshot wound and was barely alive. Lakeville Police Station rushed 31-year-old to the hospital for treatment, but sadly he succumbed to his injuries.

According to the LPD press release, the baby could be born in Hennepin County Medical Center The night of the tragic shooting took place, just a week before the due date. Kyla’s mother, Katina O’Nealtalk to CBS News and updated everyone on his grandson’s condition – which he described as “critical”:
“[He] lost a lot of oxygen to the brain, so he has no brain function now. I hold on to faith. I pray. God has got the last word, so I hope He gives them to me.
Aggravate. Katina also added how she “needs him to get over this.”
LPD was on the scene of the shooting, and quickly named a suspect – the baby’s 32-year-old father. Donte Raphael McCray. He was also identified as an employee of the Amazon facility where his mother’s body was found. Kyla’s mother revealed that her daughter had recently broken up with McCray at the time of his death:
“He didn’t deserve what happened to him. He has a promising future.
The victim’s sister Samantha Scott opened a GoFundMe to help pay the final expenses, as well as take care of his orphaned children. He told us that his mother left three other children besides her newborn son:
“I am the oldest sister of this intelligent Queen who was killed by gun violence at the hands of her father in Lakeville Minnesota my sister Kyla was 31 years old and 9 months pregnant on January 8, 2023 she was shot and killed. and my nephew was forced to be sent but fought for his life he left 4 children aged 10,7,2 and a baby who is fighting for life.
Samantha also asked for prayers for her family, especially her nephew:
“Please pray for my baby boy and my nephew and family. All donations will be appreciated [sic] for our mother Scott O’Neal.

Police believe McCray was with his ex at the time of the 911 call that alerted officers to the horrific scene. And according to criminal records obtained by local outlets KKTV, he was ordered by the court last year not to possess a firearm because of a previous criminal conviction. The man has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder and is currently being held in the Dakota County Jail.
My heart goes out to Kyla’s loved ones. I hope the baby makes a full recovery – and that the family gets the justice they deserve.
