A North Carolina man allegedly shot and wounded a six-year-old girl and her parents after the children went to retrieve a basketball that had been rolled into their yard, according to neighbors and the girl’s family — another in a string of recent US shootings sparked by seemingly trivial circumstances.

Gaston County Police Chief Stephen Zill said at a press conference Wednesday that the department and the US Marshals Service’s Regional Fugitive Task Force are conducting a wide-ranging search for a 24-year-old man who fled after a shooting Tuesday night near Gastonia, NC, a city of about 80,000 people. , on the west side of Charlotte.

The suspect was wanted in Tuesday’s shootings in four counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, and one count as a felon in possession of a firearm.

The suspect remained at large Thursday, district spokesman Adam Gaub said in an email.

Zill declined to say what led to the attack, explaining that the investigation is ongoing. However, the neighbor Jonathan Robertson said the attack happened after some neighborhood children went to pick up a basket that had been rolled into the suspect’s yard.

He said the suspect, who had yelled at the children on several occasions since moving to the neighborhood, entered his house, came back out with a gun and started shooting as the parents frantically tried to get the children to safety.

“As soon as I saw him out shooting, I was hollering at everyone to get down and get in,” said Robertson.

It is the latest in a string of US shootings that have occurred for seemingly trivial reasons, including the wounding of a teenage Black honors student in Missouri who went to the wrong address to shoot his sister, killing a woman who was there. The car pulled into the wrong upstate New York highway, and injured two Texas cheerleaders after one apparently mistakenly entered the car that he thought was his own.
