The Nigerian Correctional Service, (NCoS) says it has spent N697, 353, 617 on the welfare of its personnel, pensioners and deceased under the Correctional Welfare Insurance Scheme, (CWIS).

The Controller General of Services, Haliru Nababa, explained that CWIS is a service staff contribution scheme aimed at saving personnel in the event of accidents in the line of duty, upon retirement or upon death while on active duty. services among others.

Speaking at the 17th anniversary workshop of the scheme with the theme ‘Making Retirement a Happy Experience’ yesterday in Abuja, Nababa said “We attached a lot of importance to this annual CWIS workshop for obvious reasons.

According to him, between January and December 2022, the scheme paid 242 death claims amounting to three hundred and thirty million, five hundred and twenty two thousand, four hundred and eighty eight naira (₦330, 522, 488:00). ) while a medical claim worth eighty six million, one hundred thirteen thousand, eight hundred and ninety naira (₦86, 113, 890:00), was implemented for those who suffered various illnesses in the course of duty.

In addition, 304 other beneficiaries got pension claims totaling two hundred and eighty million, seven hundred and seven thousand, two hundred and thirty nine naira (₦ 280,707,239:00), Nababa explained.

“First and foremost, the welfare of our employees, pensioners and deceased personnel along with their family members remains paramount in our policy.”

He said the workshop offers the Service a unique annual opportunity to take stock of the operation of the scheme and develop new ideas as well as strategies that will make it better and in line with the current economic reality.

While encouraging personnel to raise their contribution subscriptions in all cadres for greater benefits, the past controller general and first substantive of the agency, Ja’afaru Ahmed, said that CWIS will always be useful during retirement and other emergency situations, providing assistance at such times . of necessity.

“This contributory welfare scheme is a deduction from various salaries and since we are in various grade levels, the subscription to the scheme is not equal but by rank and grade level.

“We are contributing very little and at the end of our service, death, resignation from service or resignation, we receive what we have contributed plus a percent so it is important for people to realize that others are the same, they will receive a good amount at the end of service, “he said.

Also speaking, the Principal Staff Officer, (PSO), for the CG, Deputy Controller General, (DCG), Salisu Mamman, who received the award of excellence together with the boss, Nababa, and directly the controller general, Ahmed, noted that the welfare scheme serves to encourage and motivate personnel in various tasks.

Because he was given an outstanding award, he said “wherever you want to set a good example and help the youth because Service is a continuum and one of the characteristics of a good leader is that you can give guidance and guidance. empower others to take over in the future.”
