
The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has destroyed items seized from various Custodial Centers across the country worth over One Hundred Fifty Million Naira (₦ 150,000,000) at its national headquarters, Abuja.
Prohibited items include, phones, SIM cards, laptops, hard drugs, power banks, and other electronic devices that are destroyed are considered contraband for inmates in custody.
The Controller General of Corrections, Haliru Nababa said the items were seized overtime through proactive measures and routine searches of cells by officers and Service officers.
In a communique, signed by the Public Relations Officers, (PRO), of the Service, Abubakar Umar, Nababa before setting up the items, said that this is in fulfillment of Sections 51 & 52 of the Service Standing Orders (SO), he then thanked the Officers for display of professionalism and assure the general public that the Service will not relent in its efforts, towards ridding all the Custodial Center prohibited items.
Nababa further said that cell searches will be an ongoing exercise to ensure that inmates in the Custody comply with standard operating procedures giving room for rehabilitation and the Reformation Program to flourish.
According to him, “returning convicts back to society as independent people and employers is the most important thing on the agenda of the Service at this time.”
