The Nigerian Navy (NN) has arrested two suspected human traffickers and rescued 18 victims in Rijiyar Lemu area of Kano.
A statement signed by the Director of Naval Information, Commodore Adedotun Ayo-Vaughan, said the rescue operation was carried out at about 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.
He said the rescuers followed a tip from a naval officer at the Finance and Logistics College, Dawakin Tofa, whose brother had recently been trafficked through Kano on the route between Libya and France.
According to him, after receiving the information, the college’s internal security team made a detailed reconnaissance of Rijiyar Lemu and Bachirawa areas where the victims were confined in an unfinished building.
He said two of the suspected traffickers were later arrested while the others were on the run.
Ayo-Vaughan said the 18 victims were rescued and taken to the college for medical examination and other necessary attention.
“The victim has been handed over to the Kano Zonal office of the National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons for necessary action,” he said.
