National Rent Assistance Scheme could be implemented – Ministry of Housing tells naysayers

The Ministry of Works and Housing has cited people who have doubts about their ability to carry out the newly launched National Rent Assistance Scheme.

Government on Tuesday, January 31, launched the National Rent Assistance Scheme as part of measures to provide Ghanaians with decent accommodation.

Ghanaians over the age of 18 with a valid national ID card and a verifiable job with income are eligible for a rental loan within five to 10 working days under the scheme.

The total rent is paid to the applicant’s prospective landlord and the applicant will make monthly payments to the National Rent Assistance Scheme.

Observers have questioned the practicality and whether the move is a panacea to alleviate the country’s accommodation challenges.

But in a statement, the sector Ministry maintained that the initiative could be implemented describing the claim as pure misinformation.

“We urge the general public to ignore all information intended to disparage this good initiative and ask for cooperation in creating a Scheme beneficial to all”, the Ministry said.

Furthermore, the reasons are:

1. The National Rent Assistance Scheme is a public-private partnership.

2. Government has contracted Rent Masters Ghana Ltd, a wholly owned Ghanaian company to help run the programme.

3. Rent Masters Ghana Ltd has been in this business since 2018 with an effective business model.

4. Under this partnership, Government will assist eligible Ghanaians to pay rent through affordable and convenient arrangements.

5. The decision to have a public-private partnership is informed by the following considerations:
• To ensure process and value for money for the sustainability of the Scheme.

• Ensure accountability and protect the pub. purse

• Exploit the experience and working business model of Rent Masters Ghana Ltd to reduce risk.

• Increase the involvement of the private sector in providing solutions to housing challenges.

6. Please note that while the NRAS website is open for public access, work is ongoing to update features and content to reflect the mandate and functions of partners.

It is currently estimated that there will be a deficit of about five million rooms in Ghana by December 2022; assuming each room is shared by two occupants.

And this deficit is expected to worsen as the population grows and rural-urban migration continues.

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has assured the newly launched National Rent Assistance Scheme (NRAS) will open without political interference.
