Nathan Jones hit back at critics after steering Southampton past Man City in the Carabao Cup, saying he was confused by non-League managers criticizing him.
Southampton overcame the favorites to reach the semi-finals as Jones’ side won a remarkable 2-0 to set up a last-four clash with Newcastle.
The Saints boss has lost his opening four games and his side are still bottom of the Premier League, but they have won twice in the cup competition at Crystal Palace and this victory was against City.
Jones was referring to comments made by Paul Doswell, manager of Havant & Waterlooville, who said he had no knowledge of the matter BBC Radio Solent.
He said: “I don’t know if I changed my perception. Within 10 minutes of the Brighton game, I couldn’t.
“The non-League manager criticized me the other day. I’m confused. I’m not talking about Havant & Waterlooville. I’m not talking about a level I don’t understand.”
“I was very pleased with the performance,” Jones said. “I thought we were very good as a team.
“We’re aggressive, we’re organized, we go after the game, it’s not a smash and grab.
“I’m proud of the players and proud of the staff. I’ve had people call me out, I’ve even had non-League managers say I’m not good enough.
“It’s a proud moment for me. To be at the same level as him (Guardiola) is great, it’s something I’ve done very well in my 33-year career.
“I believe that I have earned the right to be here. Whether people think I am good enough or not, it does not affect me because I have been asked at every level and I am happy to respond. .
“It’s tough, but you get paid as a manager.”
Guardiola fears Man City’s poor performance
Pep Guardiola feels the Premier League champions are destined to struggle on the south coast, regardless of the team he picks.
He said: “Who knew that with Kevin and Erling it would be different? I don’t know.
“We tried to do our best and play as a team when we played against Chelsea after the Premier League and it was good.
“I know how this business works. We always try to get everyone involved and everyone has to do it, but today it didn’t happen.
“I have a feeling today, it doesn’t matter what line-up I choose, we perform this way. Don’t ask me why. This is my experience.
“It doesn’t matter today the line-up we chose, it will happen because we are not here. And that’s why if it happens, he deserves it.”
