Nigerian banks on Friday announced that branches across the country will operate over the weekend to receive and exchange old notes for customers.
At Central Bank of Nigeria Last December introduced newly redesigned N200, N500 and N1,000 as part of efforts to check inflation, counterfeiting and corruption. The bank also said the old notes will cease to be legal tender on January 31.
As part of efforts to facilitate the circulation of the new notes, the apex bank also launched a cash exchange program in local government areas of the country.
On Friday, to complement the peak bank efforts, several commercial banks announced that their branches nationwide will operate on Saturdays and Sundays.
“In line with our drive to always be First, our branches across the country will be open on Saturday, January 28, 2023 and Sunday, January 29, 2023 to accept old Naira notes from 10 am – 2 pm,” First Bank said in a message. for account holders.
The lender added that there will be no charges for cash back or paid into customer accounts during this period.
“All old Naira notes of the N200, N500 and N1000 series will cease to be accepted as legal tender from January 31, 2023,” he added.
UBA in its message also said that its branches will operate and attend to customers on weekends.

GTBank, on its part, urged its customers to “save time! Don’t rush at the last minute by depositing your old Naira notes today at any branch.
The lender added that: “Our branches will be open on Saturday 28 January and Sunday 29 January 2023 from 10am to 3pm to receive your cash deposits.”
Earlier in the week, the Governor of the CBN, Godwin Emefiele, announced that there will be no return with regard to the January 31 deadline the bank stipulated for the acceptance of old notes as legal tender among Nigerians.
The apex bank also threatened sanctions against banks caught loading ATMs with old notes.
