MSNBC legal analyst and former federal prosecutor Glenn Kirschner says he believes former President Donald Trump would throw “his own family members” under the bus if he were indicted.
Kirschner, who spoke with Dean Obeidallah for the SiriusXM show on Friday, weighed in on the former president’s possible course of action as the two discussed Trump’s lawyer M. Evan Corcoran, who reportedly appeared before a federal grand jury investigating the mishandling of classified documents.
Corcoran, who communicated with federal officials during the search for return documents and made claims that all documents had been turned over, was informed by his attorney at the center of the investigation, according to Reuters.
A Justice Department filing notes that the FBI found more than 100 classified documents at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate a month after the statement was drafted.
Kirschner told Obeidallah that Trump usually fires everyone within “arm’s length”.
“It was actually a Cabinet official when he was president. It was actually his lawyer who was finally fired and could be prosecuted,” said Kirschner.
The former federal prosecutor said it’s hard to understand why people would compromise for Trump; However, he added that there was “beauty”.
“Once Donald Trump is indicted — and he will be indicted — he’s going to throw everyone under the bus, including his own family members, if he’ll reduce his jail sentence by just a day or an hour,” Kirschner said.
“So hold on tight, because it’s coming.”
Kirschner had previously predicted that the former president would be charged for his role in the January 6 attack and, in an interview with MSNBC’s Joy Reid last month, criticized the response of the Department of Justice to the deadly riots.
“I still believe he will [be indicted] and I still believe that they have to save our democracy. We’ve all heard the phrase ‘justice delayed is justice denied,’ justice delayed, hopefully not denied altogether,” Kirschner said.
“But in two years, what message is the Justice Department sending to the next wannabe dictator who might try to overthrow our government? ‘You know what, when you do, we’re going to give you two full years to figure out what the next step is.’ Boy, that’s the opposite of preventing criminal activity.
