MPs criticized the State Council for approving the appointment on EC politics

Buem Member of Parliament Kofi Adams has criticized the State Council for giving the President the power to appoint politically influential people to the Electoral Commission (EC).

Mr. Adams accused President Akufo-Addo of appointing known activists from his party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to sensitive positions including the election management body.

He expressed his disappointment at the appointment while speaking on TV3’s Ghana Tonight Show on Tuesday, March 21.

He said, “The State Council which is supposed to advise the president gave his consent to make the appointment. I am not only disappointed with the president but also the State Council.

Kofi Adams added that one of the newly appointed EC, Dr Peter Appiahene is an NPP activist who is known as a member of the party’s communication team in Bono Region.

“Clearly, there is something wrong with the president’s appointees. The president has appointed a known NPP activist,” he said.

“President Akufo-Addo has appointed people known as NPP activists, we saw Bossman Asares and Jean Mensas.

“Dr Peter Appiahene is known as an NPP activist in Bono Region, he is a member of the NPP communication team in Bono region,” he said.

Mr. Akufo-Addo on March 20 swore in three new members of the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC).

The three new members – Dr Peter Appiahene, Madam Salima Ahmed Tijani and Pastor Akua Ofori Boateng – were sworn in at a brief ceremony at Jubilee House.

The appointment is 21 months to the next primary election.

The President said, “I have always fought and supported a credible electoral process in Ghana. To emphasize the importance of electoral credibility, it must be noted that the counting, collection and declaration of results cannot and will not be more important than the sacred right given by God to the citizens of the country vote

“I have said before and I will repeat, elections are about those who vote, not those who count, not those who monitor, not those who send and not those who declare. The essence of the democratic process is to influence the choices made by those who vote.
