Graham Alexander believes Motherwell’s revival under new manager Stuart Kettlewell has saved them from relegation, while he can’t see his side beating Celtic before the end of the season.
The Fir Park side are unbeaten in four games under Kettlewell – winning three and drawing one – and have climbed to ninth in the Scottish Premiership.
Dundee United are bottom of the table and sit four points behind Kilmarnock and Ross County and 10 behind Motherwell.
Alexander, who left the Lanarkshire club on the eve of the new league season, said Sky Sports News he has been impressed at their turnaround.
“Stuart has come in and he can see what’s wrong very quickly because he’s at the club,” he said of the club’s former chief development coach.
“Those three wins are huge because it’s very difficult when you’re in that position to settle for results.
“I think the gap between them and the bottom three is big enough to be safe.
“I know they still need to win a few games, but I think they’re in the bottom three.
Are Celtic unstoppable?
Celtic maintained their nine-point lead at the top of the league on Sunday with a 5-1 win at St Mirren, a week after beating Rangers to retain the Viaplay Cup 2-1 at Hampden Park.
The Buddies are the only side to beat Ange Postecoglou’s men this season, which Graham Alexander has failed to see off.
“It’s hard to look at the record, 25 wins from 27 league games, and think it’s going to stop,” said the former Scotland defender.
“I don’t think anyone who’s seen Celtic play for a consistent period of time can say they’re going to lose and drop points. It looks very difficult for anyone to catch them.
“In 18 months at Motherwell, they were the only team that couldn’t get a point. We drew with Rangers three times and beat everyone else, but it was Celtic who couldn’t find a way.
“We pressed a lot, we sat deep, we played in the middle block, but they have individuals who go beyond tactics.
“You can defend deep, you can press them but they have good one-v-one players who can break the line, play in tight spaces and ultimately win the game.”
