Monare remains motivated despite Pirates contract coming to end

With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, Orlando Pirates midfielder Thabang Monare says he doesn’t need to wait until the end to prove what he can do to be considered for an extension.

Monare, who made just seven appearances for the Sea Robbers, was initially without the club at the start of the season after the Bucs decided not to renew his contract, but ended up renewing it for a season.

The 33-year-old now finds himself in a similar position now that his deal with Pirates is coming to an end.

“For motivation is a daily thing for me. I don’t have to wait for my contract to end to prove what I can do. That would be like cheating the game. It’s just a daily thing (for motivation), a weekly thing, where you always push yourself to be a player that better than the day before,” Monare said.

“As a football player, you have to be motivated every day, looking for improvement every day.”

Pirates have not been at their best since returning to domestic football after the FIFA hiatus late last year. The Soweto giants have been on a losing streak, having lost to Mamelodi Sundowns and Cape Town City.

Monare explained that there is a bigger picture at the club as they are still trying to find an identity with new coach Jose Riveiro, who joined before the start of the season and new players.

“Sometimes you focus on the results and don’t see the bigger picture. Then you lose a team that can be dominant in the future. We have to understand that we are a team that wants to find a new identity and it will take time and hard work. Just for a moment, everything will be fine,” he added.

Monare, who featured in Bucs’ last game against City will be crossing his fingers to make the starting line-up again when they host the Golden Arrows at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday.
