Former Head of the Monitoring Unit at the Forestry Commission, Charles Owusu has shot down critics who sought justice for the people of Ashaiman following the military invasion of the community over the death of a young military personnel, Imoro Sherrif.
Imoro Sherrif was found murdered in Ashaiman and has been buried according to Islamic rites.
The death sparked a backlash from the Military who invaded the community, dragging some residents from their homes and whipping them into a stupor.
Following the action by the Military which the authorities said was an approved operation, several human rights organizations and activists together with former President John Dramani Mahama and the Member of Parliament for the region, Ernest Henry Norgbey, condemned the operation.
“I am deeply saddened by the death of one of our soldiers, at such a young age, in Ashaiman… As a former Commander in Chief, I appreciate how an unexpected death affects the Force.
“However, I urge you to exercise restraint and allow due process to investigate, arrest, prosecute and punish the perpetrator(s) of the evil act,” the former President said in a Facebook post.
He added; “I pray that we find peace and harmony in our beloved country, as the government and state institutions immediately step in to address the inflammatory development between Ashaiman and the Ghana Armed Forces; including giving appropriate compensation to all those affected.
The Ashaiman Member of Parliament is reported to have taken steps to sue the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) for the injustice done to the people on Tuesday, March 7, 2023.
But for his critics, Charles Owusu questioned why he did not give the same energy to seek justice for the deceased who was killed by some unknown assailants in the community.
Despite his distaste for the injuries caused to the citizens, he believes that this is a necessary measure to prevent such barbaric attacks from happening in the future.
“Now, just because some people have been injured, look at the number of press conferences that have been held. I use the word ‘only’ because you cannot compare injuries with death. Look at the press conferences in the morning, in the afternoon and in the evening. people are arresting and condemning that act but what about the dead?…Between the wounded and the dead, who needs justice?”, he asked.
Sending a strong message to the people of Ashaiman and all Ghanaians, he stressed; “Under what circumstances do you have the authority to claim someone’s life. It doesn’t matter; nothing can justify you killing someone.”
