MetaMask warns users of deceptive March 31 airdrop rumors

Web3 wallet provider MetaMask has warned users about “false rumors” of a supposed MetaMask airdrop, which appear to have made the rounds on social media.

According to a March 28 tweet from MetaMask, there are “a lot of rumors going around” about a MetaMask image or March 31 airdrop.

“These rumors are not only false, but dangerous. They create opportunities for scammers and phishers,” MetaMask remembered.

Cointelegraph has identified several Twitter accounts that have ties to MetaMask or Airdrop MetaMask tokens.

Twitter accounts claiming to have MetaMask linked to phishing websites

In a Twitter post, MetaMask has denied rumors of an upcoming airdrop and asked users to be on the lookout for fake sites in the coming days.

The new rumor may be related to a “fireside chat” session with ConsenSys CEO and Ethereum co-founder Joe Lubin at ETHDenver 2023 on March 14, in which he stated that the company is “actively working to decentralize” MetaMask. He later reportedly confirmed that he plans to launch the token.

Lubin also first hinted at the MetaMask token in a November 8 Tweet from 2021, saying “Wen $MASK? Stay tuned.”

When MetaMask has canceled the upcoming airdrop, there is a lot of response from the community suggest they still have hope that the airdrop can still happen, but only at a later date.

Cointelegraph has contacted MetaMask parent company ConsenSys to clarify if there are any plans for an airdrop in the future but has not heard back at the time of publication.

Activity on MetaMask nearly tripled on the back of the rumor, with data from DappRadar showing that the number of transactions on March 27 reached 21,460 from a baseline of around 8,000.

MetaMask saw a similar flurry due to rumors of an airdrop in November 2021, after a recent airdrop from the Ethereum Name Service and Lubin mentioned the token.
