Matric results 2022: Free State leads provinces with 88.5% pass rate



The Free State is the leading province again this year with a pass rate of 88.5%, an increase of 2.8% from 2021, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga announced on Thursday.

Limpopo province was last again this year, although it was the second best province, with a pass rate of 72.1% – an increase of 5.3% from 2021.

Motshekga also commended the province for achieving the 70% pass rate, fulfilling a promise made last year after being the only province to fail to achieve the milestone.

Achievements by province

  • The Free State is the leading province with 88.5%, an increase of 2.8% from 2021.
  • Gauteng achieved 84.4%, an increase of 1.6% from 2021.
  • KwaZulu-Natal, the best performing province, achieved 83.0%, an increase of 6.2% from 2021.
  • The Western Cape achieved 81.4%, an increase of 0.2% from 2021.
  • North West achieved 79.8%, an increase of 1.6% from 2021.
  • The third best province, Tanjung Timur, achieved 77.3%, an increase of 4.2% from 2021.
  • Mpumalanga achieved 76.8%, an increase of 2.9% from 2021.
  • The Northern Cape achieved 74.2%, an increase of 2.7% from 2021.
  • The second best province, Limpopo, achieved 72.1%, an increase of 5.3% from 2021.

Aggregation by gender

According to Motshekga, more than 920,000 candidates registered for the NSC 2022 exam. There were 92,951 more girls than boys, who registered for the 2022 NSC exam – an increase of 20.3% from 2021.

Overall, 326,894 girls – an increase of 10% from 2021; and 253,661 boys – an increase of 5.4% from 2021, passed the 2022 NSC exam.

If translated into a percentage, this shows that 80.2% of girls, and 79.8% of boys, passed the NSC 2022 exam.

NSC overall performance exam

The overall pass rate of NSC 2022 reached 80.1%, (compared to 76.4% in 2021) – an increase of 3.7% from the pass rate achieved by the Class of 2021.

This is a record 580,555) candidates who passed the NSC 2022 exam – an increase of 7.9% over the number, achieved by the Class of 2021.

“Although the passing rate in the number of the Class of 2022 is the highest in the history of the National Senior Certificate examination, when the passing rate is expressed as a percentage, that of the Class of 2019, which achieved a passing rate of 81.3%, remains the highest so far,” he said Motshekga.

Candidates who wrote the NSC exam will receive their matric results on Friday. Candidates can take a statement from the school or exam center where they wrote.
