NIGERIA; A 40-year-old mobile police sergeant, Olalere Michael, who killed his lover, Bamidele Cecilia Oluwatosin, and later shot dead in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital, is married with two daughters.
The incident happened on Thursday, March 2, 2023, inside the Redemption Model Landfill and Primary School, Agba Dam, Ilorin, which is inside the UMCA Redemption Chapel.
According to Daily Trust, the late Tosin, who is said to be a cleaner at the Banquet Hall in front of the Government House, is the mother of Desmond, a school pupil who will celebrate his third birthday on May 12, 2023.
It was gathered that some parents did not allow their children to go to school on Friday because of the incident which caused panic around the area.
According to residents and shop owners around the school who spoke to the publication, the deceased mobile police officer followed his lover to the school premises and waited for her to come pick up their child before opening fire at close range.
Some were amazed that “This young and promising man would kill himself for kindness, without thinking about what his beautiful family would face.”
“The officer was wearing a camouflage police uniform. He entered the school premises about a few minutes before 8am in a Toyota Corolla earlier than a female friend who was taking her son to school later.
“As soon as he walked, he brought his AK-47 rifle and shot Oluwatosin three times in the chest at close range and he died on the spot.
“He then shot himself in the throat which blew off some parts of his head and the two men were in a pool of blood before the police arrived to evacuate the body about an hour later. It was a gory scene”, a resident, Mr. Olaleye Arodeyo, told Daily Trust.
The police after the shocking incident, denied it was a case of police brutality but more than “love is not sour” between the former lovebirds.
It was further gathered that the deceased officer with troop number F/NO 497093 was posted as one of the assistants to the Governor of Kwara State but recently left the post. While serving at Government House, he met Oluwatosin.
Residents who spoke about the issue said they had been dating for a long time but trouble started when the late Oluwatosin said he was no longer interested.
“What we found out is that Oluwatosin has a fiance abroad with whom he has a son, and who is ready to come to Nigeria after he left for Dublin about a year ago.
“Because of that, he wanted to end the relationship that triggered the frosty relationship and the fatal end,” one resident, Mrs. Hannah, said.
Unconfirmed reports said Olarere had told some of his friends at the time of the incident that he was going to kill someone and also kill himself.
“But many do not believe him because he is very good as a policeman. He has two houses, one in Ilofa and Omu-Aran, Oke-Ero and Irepodun local government area of the state. Here in Ilorin, he lives in Barrack and has a very beautiful wife and two daughters,” a police source told the publication.
It was further gathered that the late Olalere had made several attempts to convince Oluwatosin to rescind his decision to end the relationship but to no avail.
Residents said they had visited the family home of a female friend who had died a few days before he allegedly destroyed electronics and other items bought for her.
“This is the height of frustration about the situation. But Olalere loved her very much and I believe that’s why he killed her and shot himself,” said Mr. Bello, another resident of the area.
A female provision seller in the area who simply identified herself as Mrs. Benedicta said;
“Most of the time, when that man (Olalere) is there, they come to my shop to buy things. I didn’t know he was a policeman because he didn’t wear a uniform and rarely got out of the car.
“But from her character, you can see that she really loves him. This is very sad. Oluwatosin must be in her 30s and a very beautiful woman. After this incident, we found out that she has a fiance abroad who is coming to Nigeria, ” he added.
According to the police command spokesman, Ajayi Okasanmi, the body has been deposited at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) mortuary.
“What we can do now is that the two were lovers, but at one point, they had a misunderstanding that led to a mobile police officer leading them to school, shooting them and also killing themselves in the process. It has nothing to do with police brutality .
“But the Commissioner of Police, Paul Odama, has ordered an investigation into this unfortunate incident. No arrests have been made yet. But I can assure you that the investigation report will be made public when it is ready,” Okasanmi added.
