In the event on Friday, the Oscar winner and activist lamented about the legislature enacting the killing of extreme abortion restrictions since the fall of Roe v. Wade when co-host Joy Behar asked him if he could go beyond marching and protesting.
“Well, I’ve been thinking about murder,” she said, before pausing for effect.
Lily Tomlin, who stars with Fonda in “Moving On,” a dark revenge comedy that opens Friday, called for clarity on the comments.
“What did you say?” asked Tomlin.
“Murder,” Fonda repeated.
Behar then took action, and forced Fonda “By the way, they’re just kidding,” before noting that pro-lifers would “pick up and just run.” He wasn’t wrong. (Read the exchange starting at 2:25 below.)
Soon, Greene, who declared “unapologetic pro-life politicians,” he said angrily in the exchange Twitter.
The controversial Congressman wrote that he regularly receives death threats “because of the mean woman on ‘The View’ and what she said about me. (To say nothing of the violence of his own rhetoric — saying that “Democrats want Republicans dead” and calling for a “national divorce” — might have inspired it.)
“Calling for us to be killed makes ‘The View,’ the host, producers, network, advertisers, and everyone is responsible for the death threats, attacks, and potential assassinations of politicians and Pro-Life activists,” he continued.
HuffPost has reached out to Fonda and “The View” for comment.
Greene then ended her tweet with the kind of diplomatic phrasing that has become a hallmark of her political reputation.
“Yes @Janefonda your eggs are dry so you don’t have to worry about getting pregnant, so you can retire from prosecuting infanticide now,” he wrote.
It should be noted that in 2021, CNN discovered that before he was elected to Congress, Greene “liked” many social media posts recommending the execution of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and FBI agents.
His clear support for the execution of prominent Democrats as well as his embrace of racist and antisemitic conspiracy theories led to House votes to eliminate the committee’s mandate during the last Congress.
