GOP lawmakers have returned Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) to House committees nearly two years after Democrats removed them from the job, multiple news outlets confirmed.
On Tuesday, the House GOP Oversight Committee, which delegates committee work, voted unanimously to designate Greene and Gosar to the Oversight and Accountability Committee, CNN reports. Greene also holds a seat on the Homeland Security Committee, and Gosar returns to the seat he previously held on the Natural Resources Committee.
The two representatives, a supporter of former President Donald Trump and a critic of President Joe Biden, were removed from their respective committees in 2021 after controversial actions and comments.
In February 2021, the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives removed Greene from his committee duties for his racist, antisemitic and violent remarks, including his declaration that he would be armed and would have them. “win” the January 6 insurrection. Later that year, Gosar tweeted an animated video which depicts him killing his friend Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (DN.Y.) and attacked Biden, which Democrats also considered the reason to remove from the committee.
according to NBC NewsRepublicans on the Homeland Security Committee will focus on improving border security and investigating Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who GOP leaders have vowed to impeach. Meanwhile, the Republican-led Oversight and Accountability Committee is going start an investigation to Biden, and Greene seemed eager to participate.
“Joe Biden, stand up. We will find every corrupt business transaction, every foreign involvement, every abuse of power, and every check cut to The Big Guy,” Greene said in a statement on Tuesday, adding that the investigation not only stops at the Biden family but also “every government used to torture the American people.”
Greene and Gosar’s committee assignments still await ratification by the House Republican Conference, which will take place next week.
After Gosar’s ouster in 2021, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) announced that Democratic committee seats will be in jeopardy if Republicans win the House majority in 2022, which they do by a narrow margin.
CNN also reported that Reps. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) and Scott Perry (R-Pa.) added to the Oversight Committee, while Rep. George Santos (RN.Y.) who was affected by the scandal already the news assigned to Small Business Committee and the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee.
