It’s been a year since Kell Brook defeated his longtime rival Amir Khan, but the former welterweight world champion has yet to return to action.
Brook retired last year at the age of 36, but is considering a comeback, with a surprise suggestion linking him with boxing legend Manny Pacquiao.
Ben Shalom, who promotes Khan-Brook, believes the showdown with the 44-year-old Pacquiao should be an exhibition.
“I have heard [about Pacquiao]. I’m not sure. For me, it’s probably a real exhibition. It will definitely be competitive,” Shalom said Sky Sports.
“It will be a great fight for Kell, honestly, a great celebration of his career, which he deserves. But I don’t know how serious Manny is anymore.”
Shalom though revealed: “I know Kell is talking about one more fight and has asked about [Liam] Smith-[Chris] Eubank’s condition so I’m not surprised to see him in the ring.
Brook spent most of his career at welterweight though fighting Khan at a catchweight of 149lb. So boxing Liam Smith, who just moved up from 154lbs to fight Chris Eubank Jr, at super-welter should make sense to people.
“I think they’ll be very interested in the winner of Chris vs. Liam, I can’t see them fighting before June, I think it’s probably for the win,” Shalom said.
Smith vs. Eubank II could be in May or June
After a fourth-round defeat by Smith in Manchester last month, Eubank Jr. has exercised a clause in his contract to trigger a rematch with Liam Smith, and Shalom expects the fight to take place in May or June.
“I received an email directly from Wasserman [Eubank’s promoter] to officially trigger a rematch,” BOXXER’s leader confirmed.
“We’re going to try to find a date that works for all parties, but it looks like Eubanks and Wasserman and everybody wants a rematch and we’re going to get it.
“I think it’s a big fight. At first I think a lot of casual fans don’t believe Liam Smith can do it, even though everyone says he can. I don’t think anyone is convinced.
“Liam Smith has never been in a pay-per-view fight before in the UK. He’s new. He’s a new name in the Box Office fight. But since losing, he’s now in profile.
“The bookies, from what I’ve seen, Eubank is still the favorite, which is crazy for me. But it shows how much interest there is and how big this fight will be. Now Liam Smith is firmly on everyone’s radar.”
He added: “May/June I expect that to happen. There are no injuries on either side and I think they want to continue.
There will be a major fight for the winner, and Kell Brook will be one of those choices.
