Manchester United are exploring the possibility of signing Burnley striker Wout Weghorst on loan.
United are already in the market for a striker to provide attacking support for Marcus Rashford, and are understood to have made initial contact with Burnley to see if a deal could be done.
Dutch international Weghorst moved to Burnley on a three-and-a-half-year deal from Wolfsburg on Transfer Deadline Day in January 2022, but left to join Besiktas in Istanbul on a season-long loan last summer after finding his back. netted just twice for the Clarets.
Weghorst remains on loan at Besiktas for the time being, and any deal could be complicated by the fact that it would require both clubs to agree to a reduction in Weghorst’s loan.
The 6ft 6in striker scored one of the most dramatic goals of the World Cup, netting a stoppage-time equalizer in the Netherlands’ quarter-final against Argentina, before the Netherlands lost on penalties.
A loan move is thought to be United’s focus in the current window – with a view to revisiting the position in the summer when other options become available.
They were in the market for Weghorst profile players last summer – they were interested in Sasa Kalajdzic and Benjamin Sesko.

Speaking on Friday, Ten Hag said he had to cover in attack for Marcus Rashford with Anthony Martial struggling to manage the load.
Martial has had a troubled pre-season, and has been unable to complete 90 minutes this term due to an injury campaign.
“There is a reason [Martial has been substituted in his last seven games]. It’s because he can’t handle the load,” said Ten Hag. “That’s why we’re looking for another striker.
“It’s not about us not trusting him. His physical load is not so high now, so he can play three times a day for 90 minutes. So I have to manage together with him.
“Now we are on a thin line because Anthony Martial’s qualities are now very important to our game. His movement, security of the ball, pressure, don’t forget. We need that profile to be a threat.
“Also, Marcus Rashford benefited from that. So I’m not worried if it’s just Marcus scoring goals, because I’m sure of the other players. [can score too].
“Not only Anthony Martial, but Antony scored goals [in the 3-1 FA Cup win against Everton]. Bruno Fernandes can also score goals, Christian Eriksen will create and can also score goals. So we have more players who can score goals.”
