Man Utd 2 – 0 Newcastle

Manchester United ended a six-year trophy drought when they beat Newcastle 2-0 to win the Carabao Cup.

Casemiro got the opener for Erik ten Hag’s side at Wembley, who then doubled their lead before the break through Sven Botman’s own goal.

It was their first trophy since lifting the Europa League under Jose Mourinho in 2017, and perhaps the first of a potential quadruple, with United still in the FA Cup, Europa League and still in with a chance of winning away from home. Major League.

For Newcastle, a 54-year wait for a trophy – and 68 years for a domestic trophy – continues.

Newcastle were bright in the early stages but it was Manchester United who took control in the 33rd minute, when Casemiro rose from Luke Shaw’s free-kick. There was a VAR review, but the Brazilian was narrowly ruled out.

Six minutes later, the lead was doubled as Marcus Rashford combined well with Wout Weghorst before driving into the box and seeing his shot deflect off Botman before deflecting off Lloris Karius in the Newcastle goal.

Eddie Howe threw on Alexander Isak at half-time to try and help turn the tide, but he was unable to break down the stubborn and resilient red wall, as Man Utd won.

He could have added a third in stoppage time as a counter saw Bruno Fernandes race in, but he was denied by Karius from close range.

Manchester United now turn their attention to the FA Cup, with West Ham visit Old Trafford on Wednesday; kick-off 7.45pm. Erik ten Hag’s side then face another big game on Sunday Liverpool at Anfield in the Premier League, live on Sky Sports; kick-off 4.30pm.
