Mahama criticized Akufo-Addo over his latest appointment to the EC council

John Dramani Mahama, the former president, called for the amendment of Article 43(2) of the 1992 constitution to pave the way for parliamentary approval after the appointment of a known party activist from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to the board of the Electoral Commission. .

President Akufo-Addo in accordance with Article 43 (1 and 2) of the 1992 Constitution swore in three new KPR board members on Monday, March 20. The three include Rev. Akua Ofori Boateng Salima, Ahmed Tijani, and Dr. Peter Appiah.

But while delivering a public lecture at the UPSA auditorium in Accra on March 22, Mr. Mahama asserted, “of course, the appointment of known party activists to the Electoral Commission by our President now requires the amendment of Article 43(2), to provide for parliamentary approval of the new Commission for the Commission. Let me assure you again, I remain committed to this reform”.

He also called for the amendment of Article 128 to limit the number of Supreme Court Judges who can be appointed.

“Other areas include the amendment of Article 243 to appoint the District Chief Executive and Article 128 to limit the number of Supreme Court Judges who can be appointed,” he said.

The flag bearers hope the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will ensure that they listen to the suggestions of civil society groups and the youth for constitutional reform.

“In building Ghana we want; we will listen carefully to the suggestions of civil society groups and the youth front for other constitutional reforms. I have heard arguments that call for Articles 86 and 87 to be amended to have established provisions for a comprehensive long-term national development plan which will bind all succeeding governments.

“This is to reduce the uncoordinated approach to making long-term development policies. You may recall that my administration developed the 40-year National Development Plan which was discarded in 2017,” said Mr. Mahama.

In the same argument, Member of Parliament for Buem constituency and former National Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kofi Adams slammed president Nana Akufo-Addo for appointing a known member of the NPP to the board of the Electoral Commission. .

He claimed Dr. Peter Appiahene is an NPP activist who is the patron of the Tertiary Education Students Confederation Network (TESCON) – the university wing of the NPP.
