MANILA, Philippines-Magnolia assistant coach Johnny Abarrientos has been fined P10,000 after an obscene gesture directed at Converge import Jamaal Franklin during the second leg of the Governor’s Cup at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.

Commissioner Willie Marcial said Abarrientos, one of the biggest players in the PBA, regrets the incident that was recorded on live television.

“He thanked me several times,” the league leader told the Inquirer by phone.

The Hotshots, the last club to win the Governor’s Cup outside of Barangay Ginebra in the past five years, lost to Converge, 111-109.

For his part, Franklin, a former NBA veteran who has helped Converge to two of the last three wins to start the tournament, is unbothered by the episode.

“I think he was a little angry with the three I received when I got three fouls. But that had nothing to do with me. That was with the ref,” he said with a 26-point and 13-rebound performance.

He even went so far as to praise his enemies.

“Coach and I don’t have a problem. I tip my hat to him,” Franklin added about the Hotshots pulling out a 111-109 lead with 30 ticks to go in the contest.

“They have a good team. They have a real coach, a good system and they play well.
