Representatives Justin Jones and Justin Pearson were undemocratically ousted from their congressional seats by the alt-right, white male-dominated House of Representatives in Tennessee. The state responded with outrage at the Tennessee legislature and the two Justins had become beacons for democracy. A third deputy, Gloria Johnson, escaped deportation and when asked why she believed she was not deported, she said, “because I’m white.” Jones and Pearson’s ongoing report was treated with disrespect by white members of the Tennessee House. Both men are talented communicators who are committed to fighting gun reform, opposing racist practices in their state governments, and preserving the way our democracy should be run. Quoted in Democracy Now (April 7, 2023), Jones said, “They think by deporting us they will silence us, they will silence our movement, but in fact they have amplified it, because the nation can see how racist it is. The nation can see how vindictive and absurd and authoritarian. The Nashville Metropolitan Council voted Monday to return Justin Jones to the state Legislature after he was unseated last week by Republicans. Justin Pearson is expected to be reinstated this Wednesday. A special election will then be held so members from each district can vote to officially reinstate them.These Nashville students are serious about letting their legislators know it’s time to vote for life over the NRA’s campaign contributions. Similar demonstrations by young Americans are happening across the country. These young voters are a powerful voting bloc and Republicans have lost their confidence. Support for the movement to ban assault weapons and expand background checks has a 63% approval rating by Americans from both parties. Despite the reality of the epidemic of mass shootings in America, Republican legislators still do not support gun reform laws. Despite GOP support for no restrictions on gun ownership, citizen movements to address gun violence and mass shootings are growing in number and intensity. On the 100th day of the year, there were 146 mass shootings. Majorities of Americans in both parties support sensible gun control laws and bans on military assault weapons. SENATOR LINDSEY GRAHAM proudly states he owns an AR-15. WHY? Announcing this after three American children died in a mass shooting in NASHVILLE.
