Police in Portugal said on Monday that they plan to continue the search for a British child who went missing in the Algarve region in 2007, renewing international attention over Madeleine McCann’s disappearance.
In a statement, Portugal’s Judicial Police confirmed media reports about the search, saying it would begin in the next few days. He said the search, coordinated by Portuguese police, had been requested by German authorities and would be carried out in the presence of British officials.
It was unclear why German authorities requested the search, although they had previously said they were investigating German sex offenders as suspects.
Although the statement by the Portuguese police did not mention the name of Madeleine, and only for the British child who disappeared in the Algarve region in 2007, The Associated Press reported that this effort is aimed at finding Madeleine. He was 3 when he disappeared on the night of May 3, 2007, while on vacation with his family in the coastal village of Praia da Luz.
A fire official told Reuters that police are preparing to search near a dam in the southern Algarve, about 30 miles from the resort where Madeleine disappeared. Reuters reported that police had set up blue tents and closed the road leading to the dam and that 20 officers had been deployed to search.
Madeleine’s parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, said she and her siblings, 2-year-old twins, were in their apartment when they ate at a nearby restaurant.
Mr. McCann had returned to check on the child around 9 pm, and found nothing. But when her husband returned to check on them an hour later, at around 10 pm, Madeleine was gone.
After the girl disappeared, Kate and Gerry McCann helped to galvanize an international search effort that included appeals for help from British celebrities such as David Beckham and JK Rowling, and promised millions in rewards for information leading to the arrest of her abductor.
In 2020, German authorities said they had no hope of finding the girl alive after more than a decade of false hope and empty tips.
German authorities said they were investigating a German sex offender, identified by German news media only as Christian B., on suspicion of murder in connection with Madeleine’s disappearance. He lived in and around the Algarve region sporadically from 1995 to 2007.
For a while, the Portuguese authorities considered Madeleine’s parents as suspects, but they were not official.
