In the past, losing a deposit in a parliamentary election was seen as a bad sign for the future of the party. To save, a candidate must secure 5% or more of the overall vote.

In Thursday’s election, the LDs lost their deposit in two seats, but importantly won with a 29% swing over the Tories. He came out of Thursday looking strong.

Meanwhile, Labor lost a deposit in Somerton but gained Sellby and was very close in Hillingdon

Basically, lost deposits are a measure of successful tactical election campaigns where the party most likely to defeat the Tories is the one that takes the other party’s vote.

There is and will almost certainly not be a LAB-LD electoral pact but the voters can vote for themselves.
