Local New York GOP leaders urged US Rep. George Santos to “immediately” resign Wednesday after the newly sworn-in Republican lied about his background to win a congressional seat.
The announcement came after elected officials, candidates and party officials from the Nassau County Long Island Republican Party floated a “major announcement” about the “disgraced” new lawmaker.
The district party supported Santos in the November elections. But since winning the House race, Santos has admitted to making up some important details about his background. Election officials are currently investigating campaign contributions and donors.
In the announcement, district Republicans said Santos “lied” voters and did not consider him a member of Congress for the district, adding that he was not welcome at GOP headquarters or events.
