Liverpool have been left with an uphill task to keep their Champions League ambitions alive after being destroyed by a ruthless Real Madrid at Anfield.

Holders Real – who beat Liverpool in last season’s final in Paris – became the first team to score five goals at Anfield in Europe despite two early goals as Liverpool set their sights on a last-16 spot.

Darwin Nunez’s brilliant flick put Liverpool ahead after just four minutes before Mohamed Salah slotted past Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to double his lead 10 minutes later.

Liverpool supporters, angry that they were wrongly blamed for the chaos in last season’s final by raising a flag with “UEFA LIARS” and loudly chanting the Champions League anthem, soon had their thunderous celebrations hushed up in an emphatic manner.

Vinicius Junior’s brilliant strike in the 21st minute pulled a goal back before Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson followed Courtois’ lead by cutting a pass straight at the Brazilian, holding his head in grief as the ball went into the net in front of a disbelieving Kop.

That changed the whole emphasis of the contest, Real going ahead two minutes after the break when Eder Militao headed in Luka Modric’s free-kick.

Real then overturned their advantage as Karim Benzema’s shot deflected off Joe Gomez, the French striker then quickly adding to his fifth after better work by the ageless Modric.

Liverpool have pulled off spectacular comebacks before, but it will be incredible to turn it around at the Bernabeu.
