LIVERPOOL, England-Liverpool came from behind to beat Leicester City 2-1 but only after two own goals from defender Wout Faes in their Premier League clash at Anfield on Friday.

The Belgian centre-back converted from distance in the 38th minute to give Liverpool an equaliser, after Leicester had surprised in the fourth minute through Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, and then put the ball into the net again on the half-hour mark.

Liverpool, who remain sixth but move behind fifth-placed Manchester United, despite having played more games, will consider themselves lucky after a stuttering performance with both clubs at fault for missing good chances.

“We’re here to get a result and that’s what we did tonight,” said Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp, whose side have now won four league games on the trot.

“But we lost the ball at the wrong time and we were open at times. We have to take the momentum of the result but we have to play better in the next game against Brentford.

Leicester remain 13th, four points above the relegation zone, after losing their 10th league game of the season.

He took the lead when Liverpool caught a long shot from goalkeeper Danny Ward, followed by two quick touches that put Dewsbury-Hall on target.

He ran nearly half the length of the field, beyond the defense, to score.

Leicester looked good for that advantage until Faes put the ball into the box from Trent Alexander Arnold who rounded Ward into the back of the Leicester net from a tight angle.

Faes was under no pressure as he tried to fire the ball clear, giving him a cheap, albeit disappointing, equalizer.

He was also unlucky in Liverpool’s second seven minutes, chasing again as Darwin Nunez’s effort hit the Leicester post and rebounded, hitting Faes’ knee and flying into the net.

“He came back a bit rusty, didn’t play in the World Cup with Belgium, and needs time to get up to speed. But he’s been very good for us this season too. Unlucky for him tonight,” Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers said.

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah had three second-half chances to add to the home side’s lead when Nunez went close with an effort that curled over the bar with 12 minutes left.

Leicester, who lost 3-0 at Newcastle United on Boxing Day in their first league game after the World Cup break, also created some good chances, especially for Harvey Barnes who tormented Liverpool down the left.

He hit the woodwork in the last 10 minutes, but Leicester were offside in the build-up.

Liverpool, who have 28 points from 16 games, are away at Brentford on Monday while Leicester, who have 17 points from 17 games, next host Fulham on Tuesday.
