Peterborough gave their play-off rivals an early warning with an impressive 3-0 win over Lincoln in their League One early kick-off.
Darren Ferguson’s Posh closed the gap on sixth place to just four points ahead of the evening game as they suffered their first home league defeat of the season.
Goals from Jonson Clarke-Harris, Jack Taylor and Joe Ward did the damage at Sincil Bank as the visitors won again.
The hosts were the first to show when Matty Virtue’s strike went into the side netting.
Jamaican striker Clarke-Harris opened the scoring with his 24th goal of the season when he fired home unmarked after Harrison Burrows had headed in Nathanael Ogbeta’s cross from the left in the 28th minute.
After the break, Daniel Mandroiu almost equalised, but his free kick hit the wall and the post.
It was almost 2-0 just before the hour mark as Ward’s half volley from the corner of the box clattered in off the post.
But Taylor made no mistake 23 minutes from time as his effort was deflected into the back of the net.
And Ward added his third seven minutes from time as he made it his second goal in as many games.
