Mason has provided technical assistance to field officials during the top-flight encounter at the Emirates Stadium. He allowed Ivan Toney’s controversial equalizer for Brentford to stand even though replays showed that Christian Norgaard had stood in an offside position before crossing for his teammates to score.

PGMOL, which is responsible for refereeing in the Premier League, later admitted “human error” cost the title-chasing Gunners three points in their London derby date with the Bees. Mason is said to have “forgotten” to draw the correct line when investigating the play that led to Toney’s goal.

Mason was previously kicked out of the Premier League in September 2022 after disallowing a goal from Newcastle during a meeting with Crystal Palace at St James’ Park that should have been allowed to stand. Chief referee Howard Webb called an emergency meeting following a high-profile error from his team of officials, with the club affected by a series of confusing calls to apologize.
