House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) on Wednesday refused to rebuke newly elected Rep. George Santos (RN.Y.) after the emergence of the latter has fabricated some details about the background to win the election, and is now the subject of an investigation on campaign contributions.
MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell explains why.
It’s as simple as McCarthy needing Santos’ vote to pass the bill on the House floor, O’Donnell said.
No “reckless legislation” passed by a slim GOP majority will become law, the “Last Word” host said.
McCarthy, while condemning Santos, said that “the voters make the decision and (Santos) has the right to serve.”
“If it happens that they have done something wrong, then we will deal with the matter at that time,” the spokesman said.
McCarthy is now a “circus master” of House Republicans who “have no interest” or capacity to govern, O’Donnell said.
“The GOP is now the party of Santos,” he added of the first-time congressman, who earlier Wednesday faced calls to resign from state and local GOP leaders.
