Labour shadow minister refuses to call for ban on election betting

The shadow work and pensions secretary has refused to call for a ban on party officials and politicians betting on the outcome of elections.

When asked on BBC’s Today whether there should be bans on politicians placing bets, Liz Kendall said: “Politicians need to use their common sense about this.”

Labour has suspended Kevin Craig, its candidate for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich, after he wagered he would lose his bid to become an MP and became the subject of a probe into election betting by the Gambling Commission.

“If you are being investigated for breaking the rules you don’t meet the high standards that we require of our candidates and MPs,” Kendall said.

Tory candidate Tobias Ellwood has called for ban on politicians and party officials betting on elections, saying in a post on X that “we are in danger of entirely overshadowing proper scrutiny of policy in the last days of this election”.
