MANILA, Philippines—Barangay Ginebra star LA Tenorio has been diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer.
Tenorio has been unable to play in the remainder of the PBA Governor’s Cup last March 1 due to a groin injury.
In a statement released on the PBA website on Tuesday, Tenorio revealed the real reason “nothing is sudden”.
“I want to issue a statement about my health status by apologizing to my teammates, some coaches, the PBA, the fans, the media and also some friends. As most of you know, I have been suffering from a minor injury since the Finals last January. I used it as an excuse to suddenly absent. I apologize to everyone,” said Tenorio.
“I was recently diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer. Initial testing three weeks ago caused me to immediately miss practice and games. I had surgery last week and will be undergoing treatment for the next few months,” the statement said.
“I have given not only 17 full years to the PBA, but have devoted my whole life to basketball. I have committed my body and health to the love of the game. It has been passion and love. Unfortunately, there are things that cannot be controlled.
Tenorio, 38, holds the PBA record for consecutive games at 744.
The impressive record that started in his PBA debut on October 6, 2006 ended on March 1 in Ginebra’s 112-107 win over Meralco.
