As the sonic footprint of afropop continues to reach around the world, the pulse of popular music from West Africa is re-awakening the bonds that exist between emigrants and the country of origin while opening new avenues of expression in some artists.
Ukraine-based Nigerian singer Lagracemusic is in this unique 21st century cultural exchange, parlaying her life experiences growing up in Surulere in the early 2000s into warm textured Afropop.
Some of the singer’s posts like “Chocomilo,” “Wake Up,” and “Shaye” have shown the singer in the middle of a fun and exciting puzzle.
Whatever the subject may be—hedonistic sensations, bleeding heart romance, the search for social mobility or a tender call for normalcy—Lagracemusic continues to find ways to play with words and melodies to their will. In his latest song, “Wait,” the singer interrogates the nature of romance through a simple melodic foundation.
Produced by Andre Vibez, “Waiting” is a yearning for good and affirmative companionship, carefully focusing on the attraction to potential love interests. The song’s buttery production underscores Lagracemusic’s message, making for a warm and exciting start to the year for the young singer.
