KZN Police investigating two cases of murder



Police in KwaZulu-Natal are investigating two counts of murder following the shooting of SA rapper AKA (real name Kiernan Forbes) and his bodyguard at a popular nightclub on Durban’s Florida Road on Saturday evening.

Two armed suspects opened fire at close range

Police said the two men, ages 34 and 36, were walking to a vehicle from Wish Restaurant when they were approached by two armed suspects.

The suspects walked towards them from across the street and shot the couple at close range, before fleeing on foot.

“The two victims were pronounced dead at the scene. The motive for the shooting is unknown at this stage and police investigations are ongoing,” said KZN Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda.

Appeal for information

Police are appealing to members of the public with information that could assist the investigation and lead to the arrest of the suspect to contact their nearest police station or Crime Stop on 08600 10111, alternatively, tips can be submitted via the MySAPS App.

The 36-year-old rapper was in the province for a birthday celebration and performance at an establishment called Yugo.

AKA has been promoting his appearance on social media in the lead-up to the party even though his birthday has passed.

AKA family appeal for space

AKA’s parents, Tony and Lynn Forbes confirmed the news of their son’s death in a statement this morning.

“To us, Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, is a son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend, most importantly a father to our beloved daughter Cairo.

“To many he is AKA, SUPAMEGA, BHOVA and many other names that fans love to call him. Our son is loved and he gives love in return,” the statement said.

“In this sad time, we ask for mercy, space and time to come together as a family to decide the day ahead.”

Business as usual

Netshiunda, who visited Florida Road on Friday morning said the crime scene has been cleared and neighboring businesses have resumed operations as usual.

He also could not confirm that the suspect had stolen anything from the deceased.
