Kylian Mbappe Selected As New France Captain | Football/Soccer

Kylian Mbappe has reportedly been named France’s new captain by manager Didier Deschamps ahead of Euro 2024 qualifiers.

After former captain Hugo Lloris retired from international football after the 2022 World Cup, Deschamps was tasked with finding a new leader for Les Bleus. According to ESPN, the manager told the French squad on Monday afternoon that Mbappe will get the armband. The Paris Saint-Germain superstar, who scored 36 goals in 66 appearances for his country, will be officially announced as France’s new captain on Thursday.

ESPN reported that Deschamps spoke to Mbappe on Monday at Clairefontaine, the French team’s training centre, and also spoke to Antoine Griezmann – another candidate for the role – before confirming his decision to the rest of the squad. The Atletico Madrid forward will serve as vice-captain.

Mbappe has led France once in a Nations League match against Denmark last September. He will now become one of the youngest captains in Les Bleus’ history, with Deschamps confident the 24-year-old is mature enough to lead the team on the back of a stellar performance at the 2022 World Cup.
