Kwasi Appiah apologised for taking Black Stars captaincy from me – Gyan

Appiah, who was the national team coach at the time, made the veteran striker the captain general when he appointed Andre Ayew as the new captain.

The decision did not please Gyan, who announced his retirement from the national team, but made a U-turn after the intervention of President Akufo-Addo.

The 37-year-old has now revealed that he disagrees with the timing of Appiah’s decision, saying the coach has apologized.

“Of course I don’t agree but if you think you’ve made a decision why did you call me to apologize? My team met the team at the Holiday Inn,” Gyan told Dan Kwaku Yeboah on YouTube.

“He spoke to me and apologized and told me not to be angry. Why should you apologize if it was your decision? If it was the right decision, why did you call my team and sit down to talk about it? Why? If it’s because of the relationship we have do it, I know.”

He added: “He gave me the captaincy. He flew to Dubai but when he wanted to take the armband back, it was not the right time. He should have given me a real reason. There was someone who was captain before me and I didn’t have it. There is a problem with the coach but I feel the timing was wrong. And also the explanation of why he did it was incoherent. That’s why I was angry.”

“I told him at home that I was angry and suggested that he leave me from the squad to work with a healthy mind. He told me that I should think again because I was in the plan.”

Gyan does not currently have a club but insists he has not retired.
