South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R), who has been floated as a potential 2024 presidential candidate, on Tuesday called on more states to pass extreme laws banning abortion.
Abortion is illegal in South Dakota unless the mother’s life is at risk, because of the trigger law that went into effect after the Supreme Court overturned the landmark Roe v Wade ruling last summer.
Noem is now asking “every governor” to implement the same policy.
“I think talking about the situation and making a statement is very important, but also taking action and organizing and implementing policies that protect lives is more important because this is what will save lives,” Noem told CBS News.
Ian Fury, Noem’s spokesman, earlier this month criticized Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) to “hide behind a 15-week ban” on abortion.
DeSantis has been outspoken on abortion, but last month signaled the possibility of approving a six-week ban in the state.
“I’m willing to sign the good life legislation,” DeSantis said in December. “That’s what I said I would do.”
While Republicans have a supermajority in the Florida State House and Senate and can easily pass more restrictive laws, DeSantis’ widely expected presidential run may explain his reluctance to push through changes.
Asked if he agreed with Fury’s comments about DeSantis, Noem told CBS News: “I believe that every leader today has an opportunity to stand up for every life. And I’m proud that in South Dakota it’s done that way.
Republicans continue to pursue anti-abortion policies despite the party’s poor performance in the November midterm elections, in which even former President Donald Trump took an extreme position on abortion.
During the interview, Noem denied the latest Daily Beast report that Trump had given approval to go after DeSantis.
“It’s been a while since I’ve had the opportunity to talk personally with President Trump,” Noem said.
The governor did not give a clear answer on whether he plans to run for president.
“I’m not sure if I should be president but I also believe that this country needs someone who can lead us who has a vision,” Noem said.
