King Charles to honor his late father Prince Philip at the coronation.
The coronation of the king is set to take place on May 6, a date that is fast approaching, and as time ticks we get more insight into what it will actually be like. We last heard Adele and Ed Sheeran apparently turned down the request to play in the big ceremony, but has not put an obstacle in the plans of King Charles. Latest updates from Buckingham Palace it’s all about the music they’re planning to play (spoiler alert, no People Like You)!

The statement, published over the weekend, said the monarch planned to honor the late Duke of Edinburgh with a selection of music:
“His Majesty the King has arranged new music and created and selected a musical program for the Service. At His Majesty’s request, as a tribute to his late father, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Greek Orthodox music will also be featured in the Service performed by the Byzantine Chant Ensemble .
This is a personal request to honor the memory of Prince Philip. The Duke of Edinburgh was born in Greece and baptized in the Greek Orthodox church, and although he converted to marry. Queen Elizabeth IIplaying Greek Orthodox music in honor of his father is a big deal for King Charles and “modern times”.
This isn’t the only kind of music King Charles is planning, though! According to the statement, he commissioned 12 new pieces of music to be played at the coronation – including a new coronation anthem by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Yes, the same composer who brought us fantastic music from stage plays like cat and The Phantom of the Opera. Super fun for us Broadway fans!
Andrew said about the song he made in a public statement:
“I am very proud to have been asked to create a new anthem for The Coronation. My anthem includes slightly adapted words from Psalm 98. I have scored it for the choir and organ of Westminster Abbey, the brass and the ceremonial orchestra. I hope my anthem reflects the joyous occasion this.
The official lineup of the Coronation Concert has not been announced yet, but they are keeping the hype alive by teasing some big stars and great musicians!
Previously, we heard about how the royal plans to honor the tradition when crowning King Charles and Queen Camila, but also how they want to bring religious rituals to the present day. Late last year, Buckingham Palace said in another statement:
“The coronation will reflect the king’s role now and look forward to the future, while being rooted in long-standing traditions and pageantry.”
Looks like this coronation is going to be one for the books! Especially with all the family drama going around…
If you want to watch, the concert will also be broadcast live from Windsor Castle on Sunday, May 7.
