The Queen’s death also means another change in the line of succession and titles for other members of the royal family. Prince William, the eldest son of the King, is now the first heir, with his three children behind him in order of age.
After Charles and Camilla became King and Queen, William and Catherine also automatically assumed the couple’s old duchies, becoming Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge.
But in his speech on Friday, the King also officially named William and Catherine as Prince and Princess of Wales, the traditional titles for heirs. It is likely that a public investiture ceremony, similar to the one the Queen held for her son in 1969, will take place at some point.

In royal protocol since 1917, the children and grandchildren of rulers have the titles HRH and prince or princess, meaning that Harry and Meghan’s children are now Prince Archie and Princess Lillibet.
In the speech, the King made sure that Harry and Meghan, who moved to California after leaving royal life, said that they wanted to express their love “as they continue to build their lives abroad.”
He also thanked his wife, Camilla, saying he could count on her personally and as an authority to meet the demands of his new role.
