Charles brings up Canada with a World Cup reference
Joking aside, Charles says the two are at this dinner to “renew” the “indispensable” trans-Atlantic alliance.
“We have had our moments of difficulty, even in more recent history,” Charles says, obliquely referencing Trump’s squabbles with the British prime minister.
He says his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth, was dispatched to Washington in 1957 to patch up relations with the Americans after the Suez Crisis.
“Seventy years on, it’s hard to imagine anything like that happening today,” he says, to some laughter. The joke is, that’s partly why Charles is here — to smooth things over, just like his mother did.
Charles then brings up Canada, the first time he’s referenced the country during this state visit.
He says Canada and the U.S. will jointly host the FIFA World Cup this summer.
“In one sense, as heads of state, we are joint hosts,” Charles says as Trump nods along.
With Canada and four other Commonwealth countries competing in that tournament, Charles says he “likes his odds” better than Trump, who is head of state for only one contender.
And on that note, he offers a final toast to “two proud allies.”
